A bomb apparently concealed inside a toy has exploded in northwestern Pakistan, killing a 10-year-old boy and injuring four others.

According to police, the blast took place in Khaki, a suburb of Nowshera town in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, on Thursday.

“Up to six children were playing with a toy that they had found from the garbage they collected from nearby areas when it exploded, killing the boy and wounding four other children,” top local police official Khurram Rasheed said.

Reports said the 10-year-old who lost his life in the explosion was Afghan, as many refugees from the violence-hit country are settled in Khaki.

Dozens of children, mostly in the volatile northwestern Pakistan, have been killed in the past when playing with “toys” that turned out to be bombs.

On March 19, another bomb blast killed six members of a family, inducing a child in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region of North Waziristan.

Pakistan has been experiencing violence since 2001, when Islamabad joined the so-called US war on terror.

According to Pakistani authorities, nearly 50,000 people have lost their lives in the conflict.
