In Iran, action called on UAE claims

A senior member of Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has called for decisive action against the UAE’s oft-repeated claims to three Iranian Persian Gulf islands.

Spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazem Jalali criticized the country’s foreign ministry on Sunday for what he described as a lack of action against such blatant falsehoods.

“Raising issues such as claims to the Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf by certain Arab countries is undoubtedly a conspiracy,” Jalali told Mehr news agency.

He described such countries as “mere puppets of the United States,” adding that such diversionary issues are only brought up at times when the West seeks to mount pressure on the Islamic Republic.

The issue of the three islands re-emerged after foreign ministers of the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) released a communiqué following a meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

In the communiqué, the group, comprised of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, backed the United Arab Emirates’ claim to the three Iranian islands located in the Persian Gulf and urged Tehran to settle the matter either through direct talks or the International Court of Justice.

Jalali expressed concern over the issue, describing it as “unfortunate” that Iran only manages to issue statements in response to such claims.

“Adopting such stances and repeating such false claims (by the UAE) call for the adoption of speedy strict measures by the Foreign Ministry,” the Iranian official added.

The three Persian Gulf islands were historically owned by Iran but colonialism led to the islands temporarily falling under British control in the 1800s.

The islands were then returned to Iran on November 30th 1971 through legal procedures before the UAE was created and the Al-Nahyan clan assumed leadership.

According to international conventions, no state can defy any agreements which had come into being before its creation.
