Syria militants may infiltrate Russia, Federal Security Service says

kaffash20130531091645893Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) says the foreign-backed terrorists in Syria may infiltrate into Russia under the guise of immigrants for sabotage activities.

“We expect that amidst armed conflict in Syria the armed fighters and terrorists could infiltrate into our country inside the illegal immigrants flows,” China’s news agency Xinhua quoted the deputy head of FSB, Alexander Roshchupkin, as saying on Thursday.

Roshchupkin further said illegal immigration is a means to destabilize Russia, adding that the Russian security service is monitoring the national threat.

The FSB has uncovered several professional spy agents operating in the North Caucasus, Roshchupkin stated.

“It has been established beyond any doubt that the special services of foreign states are using illegal migration channels to conduct intelligence and ‘subversive’ activity to the detriment of Russian security,” Roshchupkin said without giving more details.

The foreign-sponsored militancy in Syria, which erupted in March 2011, has taken its toll on the lives of many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel.

While the West and its regional allies support anti-Damascus militants seeking to topple the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Russia remains a supporter of his government.
