Clashes erupt in Helmand ahead of massive attack

Clashes have reportedly been erupted in Afghanistan’s southern province of Helmand ahead of what is said to be the biggest offensive during the Afghan war.

On Wednesday, US marines and helicopters in Marjah, in the heart of Helmand, came under fire from militants armed with sniper rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

US Marines fired smoke rounds and armored vehicles maneuvered close to Taliban positions in the area to test the militants’ defense capability ahead of the massive attack.

Lt. Col. Brian Christmas, the commander of the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines Regiment, said later that “deception is pretty important,” to estimate the resistance the forces might face in what he called “the show of muscles.”

While, US Cobra helicopters were called in to attack militant positions, houses were searched for weapons and explosive devices.

Meanwhile, the Taliban said the war in Marjah will not prevent them from confronting foreign forces.

The Red Cross has warned that the number of casualties may rise ahead of the major assault. It said increasing security problems in Helmand have already made it difficult for wounded people to receive medical care.
