US-led soldier killed in Afghan war

A bomb attack has killed at least one soldier with the US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in southern Afghanistan, Press TV reported.

In a statement released on Sunday, the NATO-led ISAF said that the soldier had been killed by a roadside bomb on Saturday but did not reveal the nationality of the soldier.

According to iCasualties.org, at least 420 US-led soldiers, most of them Americans, have died in Afghanistan so far this year.

August 2011 was the deadliest month for US troops in the decade-long war in Afghanistan, with 66 American soldiers killed during that month.

The figure, released by the Associated Press on Tuesday, eclipsed the earlier figure of 65 from July 2010.

Most of the fatalities resulted from an August 6 helicopter crash in which 30 US troops lost their lives. The soldiers were onboard a Chinook shot down by Taliban militants in Afghanistan’s Wardak Province in the single deadliest incident of the Afghan war.

Twenty-three other American troops died this month in the provinces of Kandahar and Helmand in southern Afghanistan. The remaining 13 were killed in eastern Afghanistan.

The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led foreign forces.

The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
