US seeks revenge on Iran, talks only a ploy: MP

fathi20130325133017187A senior Iranian lawmaker has scoffed at US offer of direct talks with Iran, saying Washington has never sought to negotiate with Tehran “on an equal footing,” but is bent on taking revenge on the Islamic Republic.

“The Americans have always followed a dual policy towards us. For example, they say they are after negotiations with Iran, on the one hand, while intensifying sanctions against Iran, on the other,” member of Iran Majlis Presiding Board Hossein Sobhaninia noted on Monday.

The lawmaker added that claiming to be after talks with Iran is a US ploy to which the Americans resort every once in a while.

The legislator emphasized that the US is not honest with Iran, urging Washington to review its approach and performance on Iran and stop imposing tough sanctions on Tehran.

Sobhaninia noted that all available evidence shows that the Americans do not really seek to resolve their problems with Iran, but seek revenge on the Islamic Republic.

On March 21, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei alluded to the repeated US offers of direct talks with Iran and said, “Through different ways and messages, the Americans try to negotiate with us on the nuclear issue, but I am not optimistic about these talks.”

The Leader said he was not opposed to talks on the nuclear issue, but emphasized that “certain issues must be clarified.”

A day after the Leader’s remarks, US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed Washington’s ‘strong’ commitment to settle its differences with Iran.

“Despite the difficult history of the last decades between the United States and Iran, there is an opportunity to work diplomatically to reduce tensions and address the mistrust between our two countries, to the mutual benefit of both of our people,” Kerry said in a statement.
