A high-ranking Iranian official says the fate of Syria should be determined through a Syrian-Syrian solution.

Chairman of Iran’s Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi stated that the Islamic Republic has been seeking establishment of peace and stability in Syria since the conflict broke out in March 2011.

The Iranian official made the remarks on the sidelines of the second meeting of heads of parliamentary foreign policy committees of friends of Syria in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Sunday.

Boroujerdi also called on the United States to respect the principles of democracy in Syria.

Syrian people must decide their own fate, the Iranian official said, expressing optimism about the future outlook of Syria.

The Syrian government has announced that it will hold the country’s presidential election, as scheduled, on June 3.

The three presidential candidates in Syria include incumbent President Bashar al-Assad, Maher Abdel Hafiz Hajjar, and Hassan Abdullah al-Nouri.

On May 28, Syrian citizens living abroad began voting at the Syrian embassies in a number of countries including the Islamic Republic.

Damascus has dismissed Western and opposition accusations regarding the election, saying that it is planning to hold free and transparent polls.

According to Syrian media, several countries including France, Germany, Belgium, and the United Arab Emirates have prevented Syrians from casting their ballots.
