UN: Food insecurity threatening world

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP) warn against raising food prices calling for concerted efforts to fight global hunger, Press TV reported.

On the World Food Day on Sunday, WFP launched an online campaign called “Feed a Child, Feed a Dream” that encourages visitors to give donations to feed impoverished children worldwide, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Citing World Bank Data, FAO said rising food prices had plunged nearly 70 million people into extreme poverty in 2010-2011.

“Greater policy coordination in international food trade can reduce volatility by helping maintain an assured flow of goods,” the organization said.

In a message on the occasion of the World Food Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that price volatility can be devastating for the world’s poorest people.

“This year’s World Food Day highlights the issue of price volatility. For the world’s poorest people, many of whom spend up to 80 percent of their income on food, this can be devastating,” Ban said in a press release issued by the UN Information Center (UNIC) on Sunday.

“In 2007-2008 food price inflation pushed some 80 million people into hunger. Recent food price hikes have propelled another 70 million people into extreme poverty”.
