The objects being destroyed are thousands of years old. And the men belong to the ISIL terrorist group. The venue: the Museum of Mosul in Iraq. These images shot by the terrorists have triggered widespread criticism around the world. The Bagdad Museum escaped that tragedy and reopened recently.

Iraq and Syria make up a large part of the territory that was once home to the ancient Mesopotamian civilization. The UN Security Council’s Resolution 2199 bans all trade and destruction of national heritage in Iraq and Syria. But as illicit trade continues, the UNESCO wants to implement stronger measures.

The Paris-based UN body has also expressed concern over the attacks on the cultural, religious and ethnic diversity of Iraq and Syria.

‘This has been the strongest criticism from the UNESCO’s General Director. In the coming months, the UN body wants to dismantle the illicit trade networks in Iraq and Syria.
