At least five people have been killed and six others injured in a series of shootings in the US states of Texas and Massachusetts.

Police found four people shot in a southwest Dallas home Wednesday night, according to CBS news. Two of the victims were shot fatally.

The suspect fled to a nearby suburb where he was involved in another shooting which left two more people wounded and another two dead.

Police arrived quickly at the home where the second shooting took place and took the suspect into custody.

Meanwhile, a shoot-out on the streets of Dorchester, Boston’s largest neighborhood, on Wednesday left two police officers wounded and a suspected gunman dead.

Gun violence in the US came under spotlight after a gunman killed 20 first-graders and six adults in a rampage at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012.

Since the deadly shooting in Newtown, nearly 7,000 Americans have been killed by guns, according to an interactive project between slate.com and the anonymous creator of the Twitter feed @GunDeaths.

According to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 32 people are murdered with guns in the US every day and 140 Americans are treated for gun-related injuries in an emergency room.

Many critics have blamed the notoriously liberal gun control laws in the US for the high rate of gun murders in the country.

Gun purchases made online or at gun shows do not need a background check in the US and, in general, 40 percent of gun sales are conducted without a background check.
