Activists sue US police for using brute force on 99-percenters

Civil rights activists in the US have taken legal action against American police forces over the brutal manner in which they have treated anti-corporate protesters throughout the country.

A number of the New York City Council members, along with supporters of the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement have charged that the US police have resorted to using excessive force against the Occupy protesters, also referred to as the 99-percenters.

Other identical lawsuits have also been filed against American police departments in recent days.

The development comes as the OWS activists and supporters are preparing to wage a number of mass rallies across the country to mark May Day. The 99-percenters have stated that the day of action would be the first truly nationwide general strike in the American history.

The Occupy Wall Street activists are calling Tuesday their “coming out party” and the start of their spring resurgence, after the cold weather and evictions enforced by the authorities obliged many to stay home over the winter.

The Occupy Wall Street movement began when a group of demonstrators gathered in New York’s financial district on September 17, 2011 to protest against corruption, the unjust distribution of wealth in the country, and the excessive influence of big corporations on US policies.
