Libya revolutionaries’ military chief dead

Libya’s Transitional National Council (TNC) says Abdel Fattah Younes, the revolutionary forces’ commander-in-chief, has been shot dead.

“With all sadness, I inform you of the passing of Abdel Fatah Younes, the commander-in-chief of our rebel forces,” TNC chief Mustafa Abdel Jalil said.

Abdel Jalil did not explain the circumstances of his death, AP reported on Thursday.

The former interior minister had defected from Libyan ruler Muammar Qaddafi’s regime to become the military leader of the revolutionary forces.

In April, he criticized NATO over what Libyan revolutionary forces call the Western military alliance’s inability to prevent regime forces from killing civilians.

He also lashed out at Western-led forces over the civilian death toll of NATO’s bombings.
