Iran: Final agreement depends on Western side’s ‘responsible conduct’

Iran reiterates that reaching a final agreement in Vienna, which is hosting talks between the Islamic Republic and the remaining signatories of a 2015 deal, solely depends on the Western side’s responsible attitude.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian tweeted the remarks in early Wednesday, in which he mentioned the contents of an earlier phone call he had with the European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

“The Iranian side’s initiatives have put an agreement within reach, but conclusion of a final agreement depends on the Western side’s responsible conduct,” the top diplomat said he had told the European official.

The EU coordinated the talks that led to conclusion of the 2015 deal.

The United States left the deal in 2018 and returned the sanctions that it had lifted.

Now, Brussels is coordinating the talks that are aimed at exploring the potential of removal of the American bans against the Islamic Republic.

The Western side that is attending the talks features the UK, France, and Germany that have been complying closely with the Washington’s sanctions against Tehran.

Speaking to his British counterpart Liz Truss on the phone on Tuesday, Amir-Abdollahian likewise underscored that the negotiating sides could arrive at a “good deal” if the Western parties adopted a “realistic approach

The Iranian foreign minister also cautioned Borrell that the other side’s respect for Tehran’s “redlines” was of “essential importance” to the Islamic Republic, adding that some “important issues remain” to be dealt with as part of the negotiations.
