Pakistan slams US over chopper attack

Pakistan has slammed a US-led airstrike on its soil near the Afghan border that killed at least 50 people and wounded many others.

In a Monday statement, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for an end to such attacks.

Two helicopters operated by the US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan crossed into Pakistan earlier Monday, killing at least 50 people.

The US-led alliance said the move was an act of self-defense after militants targeted a small military outpost near the Pakistan border.

“These incidents are a clear violation and breach of the UN mandate under which ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) operates,” Pakistani foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit said in a statement on Monday.

The statement stressed that the strikes were in violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.

The ministry also warned it would respond to the attacks if they continue.

US officials say they have an agreement with Islamabad that allows their aircraft to cross into Pakistan during security threats.

Islamabad has denied that such an agreement exists.
