Tunisia unrest: Another revolution in the making?

On January 14, 2011, weeks-long street protests and civil disobedience led to regime change in Tunisia. The uprising was triggered by self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi in protest at economic hardship the 26-year-old man and his family had endured for years. Bouazizi was just one of thousands of young Tunisians who were boiling with anger over years-long economic woes, unemployment and widespread corruption. Seven years on, the North African country is again rocked by demonstrations over the government’s austerity measures which have resulted in price hikes. Hundreds of protesters have been arrested and scores of police wounded in clashes that broke out in several parts of the country. And the death of a 45-year-old man, whom Police have insisted they did not kill, has fanned the flames of unrest.

World US arms sales just got a boost

A recent revelation shows the administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing to launch a plan to increase sales of American arms across the world. Reuters has quoted unnamed officials in Washington as saying that the plan calls for US military attaches and diplomats to help increase America’s global sales of weapons. That is expected to change the nature of the missions of diplomats that had so far been mainly focused on providing limited assistance to the countries in which they served among other issues. But this new approach that Trump is expected to take sometime soon would also have serious implications that simply go beyond the borders of America.
