At least three people have been killed as massive protests erupted against the military-backed government across Egypt.

Dozens of people were also injured on Friday when thousands of supporters of the ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, held anti-military demonstrations across the violence-wracked country.

The Muslim Brotherhood supporters were killed as police attacked them in Cairo, as well as Minya Province and the Nile Delta city of Damietta.

Cairo’s al-Azhar University was also the scene of violent clashes between stone-throwing protesters and security forces. This comes after one person was killed in overnight clashes around al-Azhar University.

Protests in several major Egyptian cities have led to nearly 270 arrests.

Tensions in Egypt flared after the interim government declared the Brotherhood a “terrorist” organization on Wednesday.

The army-backed government has threatened supporters of Morsi with jail terms if they join rallies organized by the group.

On Thursday, the interim government arrested at least 200 activists and Brotherhood members. The group says it will keep up protests until its demands are met.

The angry demonstrators have been demanding justice for Brotherhood supporters killed in the army crackdown following Morsi’s ouster in early July.

The interim government took power after Morsi was ousted by the army on July 3.

Hundreds of supporters of the group have been killed in clashes with the army over the past few months.
