NAM renews support for Iran

118 member states of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), have once again voiced support for Iran’s right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

NAM has sent a letter to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, underscoring its support for Iran’s nuclear energy program.

The organization said nations, including Iran, have an inalienable right to the peaceful use of atomic energy.

NAM also voiced its support for a nuclear swap declaration that was signed in Tehran last month.

The declaration, signed by the foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey, and Brazil, in the Iranian capital on May 17 commits Tehran to put 1,200 kg (2,640 lb) of its low-enriched uranium in escrow in Turkey in exchange for 120 kg (264 lb) of 20 percent-enriched nuclear fuel for the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment.

The body says diplomacy is the only way to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.
