Two French police officers have been charged with the gang rape of a Canadian tourist in their Paris-based police headquarters.

Four police officers were initially taken into custody following a complaint filed by the 34-year-old female Canadian tourist, saying she had been raped while staying overnight in the police headquarters on April 22.

Two of the police officers were released from custody on April 26 but the remaining two, who are part of a special taskforce that specializes in dealing with gang crimes, were charged on Sunday.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve announced earlier that all the necessary measures will be taken if the accusation against the officers is proven in court.

“I want the justice system and the police inspectorate to complete their investigations so that the truth can be established,” Cazeneuve said in a speech to police forces in Marseille on Friday.

Reportedly, the woman met the police officers at a local store and agreed to accompany them back to their workplace after she found out the officers had used to work in her home city of Toronto.

Shortly afterwards she was found near the police headquarters in a state of distress by traffic police, following which she filed the alleged assault complaint.

One of the police officers has admitted to having sex with the woman but all four deny the rape claim.
