5.9-magnitude quake hits Afghanistan, Pakistan

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale has jolted parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The epicenter of the quake on Thursday was on the Afghan-Tajikistan border at a depth of 225 kilometers (140 miles), Pakistani meteorological officials said.

Officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

According to the US Geological Survey, the tremor was also felt in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.

The quake also hit northwestern Pakistan, Islamabad and parts of Pakistan’s central province of Punjab.

In October 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale jolted Pakistan, mainly in Pakistani-administered Kashmir and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, leaving more than 73,000 people dead and about 3.5 million homeless.
