Kyrgyzstan’s deposed President resigns

Kyrgyzstan’s interim government says the country’s ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has formally resigned and flown to neighboring Kazakhstan.

The new leaders in the Kyrgyz capital say Bakiyev has faxed his resignation letter.

A deadly revolt overthrew Bakiyev’s government on April 7. The violence left more than 80 people dead and hundreds more wounded.

Meanwhile, Russian President Dimitry Medvedev has voiced hope that Bakiyev’s resignation could help steer the country away from civil war.

The Russian president called on Kyrgyzstan’s interim leaders not to repeat their predecessors’ mistakes, warning against nepotism and corruption. He also promised humanitarian assistance for the former Soviet republic.
