US failed in Iraq, Afghanistan wars

Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says the US-led wars on Iraq and Afghanistan have been two major failures for Washington and catastrophes for the international community.

“The miserable implications of these two wars will afflict the people of these countries and the international community for a very long period of time,” said Larijani in a meeting with former Italian prime minister Romano Prodi in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

“The expansion of terrorism, drug trafficking and insecurity across Afghanistan are the inevitable outcomes of the US unilateralism in the region, and the resolution of regional crises require prudent measures,” Fars news agency quoted Larijani as saying on Monday.

The senior Iranian official criticized the West’s support for Israel’s expansionist policies, adding that “giving false hopes to the oppressed people of Palestine will not help Palestinians to achieve an independent state.”

Elaborating on Iran’s nuclear program, the Majlis speaker went on to say that the Islamic Republic has always taken legal and logical path in nuclear talks, arguing that the US words and deeds are in contradiction.

Prodi, for his part, characterized Iran as a powerful and great country in the Middle East region, noting that Iraq and Afghanistan are faced with security problems due to the US war policies.

He also reiterated that the public opinion and even the US leaders have admitted their wrong policies, but always justified them.

The former Italian premier emphasized that new opportunities need to be created for the continuation of talks over Iran’s nuclear program.
