Iranian scientist and manager of stem cell study project explained the process for bone marrow transplantation in curing Diabetes as the new achievement of Iranian scientists.

Dr Bagher Larijani, head of Medicine faculty of Tehran University said the plan for cell therapy of Diabetes had been proposed in 2009, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

Dr Larijani referred to studies carried out for curing Diabetes by Mesenchymal stem cells of bone marrow as a new method in the world and said the level of Insulin in some patients was either decreased or cut but it did not end in acute side effects.

Head of Medicine Faculty of Tehran University also said another part of this project is to study the risk of the method and a three year application of the method there has been no report on any kind of side effect in the patients.

Manager of the project “Processing and Applying Stem Cells in Chronic and Incurable Diseases” said,” Controlling and balancing immunity system is one of the proposed mechanisms.”

He counted recovery and substitution of the cells as another mechanism and added that there are difficulties in accessing cellular resources though there has been remarkable improvements in curing Diabetes by fetal stem cells and some of the patients have experiences a reduction of Insulin dose or completely needless of that.

Diabetes is a chronic (lifelong) disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood and ranks now, as the fifth most frequent killer disease.

Previously in February 2008, Iranian scientists made, Angipars, the world’s first herbal medication for the effective treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.

According to studies the drug has been effective in treating 90 percent of those afflicted hence ranking the drug as the most effective medication for the condition to date.
