Syria calls for UN action against US aggression

Syria has asked the United Nations to take action against US-led aggression on Syrian soil as the United States does not seem to be retreating from its military ambitions in the Arab country amid international condemnation.

According to Syria’s official news agency, SANA, Syria’s ambassador to the UN Bashar Ja’afari called for UN intervention in a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday.

“The Syrian government calls on the UN Secretary-General to assume his responsibilities … and to make efforts to prevent any aggression against Syria,” Ja’afari wrote in the letter.

The letter also urged the United Nations to help find a “peaceful political solution” to the 30-month-long crisis in Syria. Ja’afari said in the letter that the Syrian government was not involved in a deadly chemical attack on August 21, over which Washington is calling for punitive strikes against the Syrian military.

“The Syrian government repeats once again that it has never used chemical weapons,” Ja’afari said.

He also accused Washington of moving toward taking military action against Syria over Syria’s opposition to US foreign policies.

“The world was expecting the United States to play its role as a sponsor of peace … by preparing seriously for the Geneva conference on Syria, and not as a country that uses military force against those who oppose its policies,” he added.

Tensions rose higher in the region after US rushed to dispatch its warships toward Syria, threatening to bomb several areas in the country, based on conflicting reports of an alleged chemical attack in the country.

The US-backed militants posted pictures and videos of an alleged chemical attack which they claimed the Syrian army was responsible for it.

The Syrian government, which has already called for UN action against several cases of chemical attacks by anti-Syria militants in the country, rejected the claims as baseless and paved the way for visiting UN team of inspectors to investigate the story.

Syria says the attack was actually carried out by the foreign-backed militants to open way for their Western and regional supporters to attack Syria.

Despite killing of at least 100,000 people in the massive insurgency in Syria, the US had said that it would enter the conflict if a chemical attack was carried out.
