Iran to US: Do not violate rights

Following the US inhumane treatment of an Iranian woman imprisoned in the United States for three years, Iran recommends Washington observe the rights of its nationals.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Swiss envoy over the US mistreatment of Shahrzad Mir-Qolikhan who was arrested in the US in 2007 after being forced to return to America from a vacation in Cyprus.

Mir-Qolikhan’s former husband, Mahmoud Seif, had allegedly tried to export night-vision goggles to Iran from Austria.

However, she was detained and sentenced to five years in prison by a Florida federal court in the absence of her husband. Mir-Qolikhan has now been in prison for nearly 3 years.

“Defense for the rights of Iranian nationals in different countries is among serious issues which is on agenda of Iran’s Foreign Ministry,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on Tuesday.

As the protector of US interests in Iran, Switzerland transfers Iran’s recommendations on the necessity to stop violating rights of Iranians, he added.

The spokesman emphasized that some Iranian nationals are detained and kept in the US “illegally” and noted that they are deprived of most basic rights.

Mehmanparast urged the United States to closely observe the rights of Iranian nationals.
