Kingdom of hypocrisy UK seeks to recreate Iraq-like scenario in Syria

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has warned the Syrian government against the use of chemical weapons in what many view as an attempt to recreate an Iraq-like scenario in Syria.

Speaking to the BBC on the sidelines of the 8th invitation-only Manama Dialogue on Saturday, Hague claimed the UK and the US have seen “evidence” that Damascus wants to use chemical weapons as fighting rages on between Syrian government forces and foreign-backed militants.

The Foreign Secretary also declined to give details of the intelligence reports, but added that he understood the “skepticism”, following the Iraq war weapons scandal almost a decade ago.

On September 24, 2002, the British government published “Iraq’s Weapons of Mass Destruction: The Assessment of the British Government,” also known as the September Dossier, which alleged that former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction.

However, almost two years after the US-led invasion of Iraq, the CIA’s top weapons inspector in Iraq said they found no such weapons in the country.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is also accused of conspiring with former US President George W. Bush in waging an illegal war against Iraq.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, as there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

Syrian officials also believe that Western countries are preparing the grounds for a military intervention against the Arab country under sham concerns over the possible use of chemical weapons by Damascus.
