US will do best against Palestine statehood: Gaza academic

The United States will certainly try and disrupt any future Palestinian attempt to build a Palestinian state, says a Gaza university academic.

Hani al-Bassos, a professor at the Islamic University of Gaza, said in an interview with Press TV that the United States “will use the veto against any Palestinian initiative which can be sent to the UN to make a resolution” with regard to the issue of the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Washington “will do its best not to give the Palestinians the chance to build the Palestinian state.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called on the parliaments of all world countries to recognize Palestine as an independent state after the European Parliament voted in favor of such a move.

Bassos further noted that the move by Abbas “leads to going to the UN and approaching the European community and many states and nations in the world calling for recognition of a Palestinian state.”

“This move or this step by the Palestinian Authority would have a negative impact on the Israeli side, specifically because the Israeli entity is being building settlements and have been neglecting all the calls by the international community to stop the occupation,” the academic stated.

On December 17, the European Parliament unanimously voted in favor of a motion to “unconditionally” recognize Palestine as a sovereign state.

The recognition vote follows similar votes by some European countries’ legislatures, including those of France, Britain, Spain and Portugal, which call on their respective governments to recognize Palestinian statehood.
