Video- Libyan revolutionaries aiming to liberate Gaddafi’s hometown

Around Gaddafi’s hometown revolutionaries gather with one aim…to liberate it from a dictator’s grip. They believe the liberation of Sirt will be a key symbol that will boast the efforts of the revolution.

Ibrahim is a revolutionary from Benghazi and he thinks that this conflict had brought Libyans together.

Although on the ground, there is the presence of tensions between revolutionary groups. At this recently captured army camp outside of Sirt revolutionaries compete over its claim.

They arrive from both West and East of the country, from Misratah and Benghazi, and they meet here to contend in being the first to enter the city and purge it of any Gaddafi influence. Ahmad, a revolutionary from Misratah, thinks much of the efforts that liberated Misratah and the surrounding towns had come from within the city.

The scars of the conflict in Misratah explain why the people of this city believe they must receive greater recognition in the liberation of Sirt. In the early months of the revolution Misratah had been placed under siege, and bombarded from all sides by Gaddafi forces.

The tell tale signs of a broken city began to emphasis its own sense of self-reliance. Yet on the political stage, the same opinion is not expressed.

The voice toward the high end of Libya’s revolutionary structure reflects unity, some of which is emphasized on the streets of Misratah. But it does beg certain questions.

As the conflict continues contentions amongst Libyans will place a question regarding an underlying fractured national identity.

In a country that is heading toward an end of a conflict and the beginning of a political transitional period one should have one question in mind. How will the country cope with future tensions of it people’s various loyalties?
