‘West vents anger at Syria over resistance against Israel’

The senior adviser to the Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei says the West has been wreaking vengeance on Damascus by attempting to overthrow the Syrian government.

Ali Akbar Velayati also said the West’s anger against the wave of Islamic Awakening, their efforts to salvage Israel and certain reactionary Arab regimes plus their attempts to dominate the crucial region of the Middle East were among the other reasons behind anti-Syria efforts.

He further said Thursday that the Western countries have targeted Syria since it is the most sensitive axis and a frontline of resistance against Israel.

The senior adviser to the Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei reiterated that the Syrian government has been the forerunner of resistance against Israel since the 1967 war, and also rebuffed Camp David agreements.

The Syrian government would not collapse as Muslims have no unity with enemies in breaking the frontline of resistance against Israel, Velayati said, adding that Iran, Iraq and Hezbollah would firmly stand by Syria.

He also criticized certain regional countries’ policies regarding the developments in Syria and said some reactionary Arab regimes, which have not experienced democracy in their own countries, are now calling for the establishment of democracy in Syria.

Velayati, however, said there are problems in Syria and urged Damascus to implement reforms.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Monday that some foreign countries are fueling unrest in his country by supporting and funding armed terrorist groups fighting against the government. He said that they are blocking attempts to end months of unrest in Syria and preventing it from treading the path of reforms.
