Arab League (AL) foreign ministers have held an emergency meeting to discuss ways to end Israel’s “dangerous escalation” of violence against Palestinians.
The 22-member bloc said on Monday that the rise in violence against Palestinians by Israeli forces and settlers was a major concern for the group.
“This emergency meeting comes with the dangerous escalation by the Israeli government, the settlers, the Jewish extremist groups, and the Israeli forces in the blessed city of [East al-Quds] Jerusalem,” United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who chaired the meeting, said.
The AL added that they were seeking to make a decision aimed at stopping the “crimes and violations.”
AL Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi also called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and other bodies to make more efforts to halt the continuation of the current situation.
This comes as some 80 Palestinians, including at least 17 children and four women, have been killed in the recent escalation of violence since the start of October.
The violence erupted as a result of tensions over restrictions imposed by Israel against the entry of Palestinians to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in recent months.
Palestinians are also angry at increasing violence by Israeli settlers at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound and their attacks on Palestinian properties, saying that the Tel Aviv regime seeks to change the status quo of the compound, which is the third holiest site in Islam.
