Sudan disrupts ‘plot’ linked to military, opposition

Sudan’s intelligence service says it has disrupted a “plot” by members of the military and the political opposition to disturb state security.

The Sudanese Media Centre, which is close to the security service, said on Thursday, “The security and intelligence service early today stopped a plot to disturb security.”

Civilian and military personnel linked to the security disturbance were also arrested. Sudanese authorities have launched an investigation into the links between the detainees and the security disturbance.

“This plot is led by some opposition party leaders,” the Media Centre said.

At about the time that the plot was reportedly broken down, tanks, armored vehicles and troops were seen moving in the streets of the capital Khartoum leading to the downtown area where government buildings are located.

Security at the defense ministry, intelligence headquarters and other buildings associated with military and security authorities appeared normal early in the morning.
