UK concludes military involvement in Iraq

Britain has concluded its troop presence in Iraq following its six years of military involvement in the war-torn country.

Under a deal between Baghdad and London which was inked last year, the last of Britain’s forces, totaled as many as 46,000 in 2003, left this week, a spokesman for the British Embassy in Baghdad told AFP on Friday.

Britain’s troops entered Iraq in 2003 when the then US president George W. Bush ordered the invasion of the oil-rich country.

Most of the British forces were based in the oil-hub city of Basra which is Iraq’s second largest and most populated city after Baghdad.

Under the signed Baghdad-London agreement, all British soldiers in Iraq would complete their mission by June, before withdrawing completely by the end of July.
