Californians hold rally in support of violent crimes victims

23rd Annual Victims March on the State Capitol [Tues 24 April 2012] 7People in the US state of California have taken to the streets to support victims of violent crimes, including victims of rape and human trafficking, Press TV reports.

The demonstration, part of a statewide action recognizing National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, took place in Orange County on Saturday.

Demonstrators say the rally is not just about remembering crime victims, but also crime survivors and those who were left behind.

“Not only from the advocates and the criminal justice system, they need support from the community, and during victim’s rights week we are able to extend our appreciation,” said Victims Witness Assistance’s Donna Wills during the rally.

Another demonstrator identified as Maria Flores who lost her son Jonathon after he was gunned down in a gang shooting, said, “It is very important, it is sad to see that so many people have to lose their lives just for no reason.”

Jonathon’s death is just one of the many that have left families suffering across the state.

The demonstration focused on putting an end to human trafficking. Reports say more than 17,000 adults and children are affected by human trafficking annually in the United States.
