Iran-Powers Talks Should Focus on Non-Proliferation, Removal of Sanctions

A senior Iranian legislator underlined that non-proliferation and removal of the sanctions against Iran should be the focus of the next round of negotiations between Tehran and the world powers in Baghdad on May 23.

“Non-proliferation of atomic weapons which are a big danger should be one of our top priorities in negotiations with the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) in the next round (in Baghdad),” Vice-Chairman of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Esmayeel Kosari said on Saturday.

Kosari also underlined that removal of the western sanctions against Iran over its peaceful nuclear program should be high on the agenda of the next round of talks between Iran and the world powers.

“Removal of sanctions, which are bullying and irrational moves, should be the focal point in the talks,” he reiterated.

Iran and the six world powers resumed negotiations in Istanbul last Saturday after a year of stalled talks and are due to continue their talks in Iraq’s capital city, Baghdad, on May 23.

Tehran’s chief negotiator Saeed Jalili headed the Iranian side, and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton led the delegations of the world powers.

“What was discussed in the talks today was an emphasis on our nation’s nuclear rights based on the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT),” Jalili told reporters after two rounds of talks with the representatives of the Group 5+1.

Jalili also stressed that withdrawing sanctions against Iran should be a focal point in any future talks on cooperation between Iran and the world powers.

Asked if the two sides had any discussions over those nuclear states which are not party to the NPT and do not, thus, find themselves bound to the international rules and community, he said today’s talks more focused on the framework of future negotiations and cooperation, “but this is a vital issue in nuclear cooperation, specially on disarmament and non-proliferation of c”.
