Zionist-backed Bahraini regime forces attack Bahraini mourners in al-Daih

Bahraini security forces fired tear gas and stun grenades on Friday to disperse thousands of mourners who attended the funeral of 22-year-old Jafar al-Dirazi, who had been arrested in December 2013.

On Wednesday, al-Wefaq announced Dirazi, who suffered from anemia, had died in jail due to torture and lack of medical treatment.

Mass rallies followed later in the day upon a call by the opposition for anti-regime marches in condemnation of Dirazi’s death.

Clashes also erupted on Thursday between security forces and protesters who staged a rally in al-Daih to voice their anger over the activist’s death.

The victim is one of the scores of activists who have lost their lives at the hand of the Al Khalifa regime since February 2011, when an uprising against the ruling family started.

Over the past three years, thousands of pro-democracy protesters have held numerous demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.

On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates invaded the country to assist the Bahraini government in its crackdown on peaceful protesters.

Earlier this month, Amnesty International censured Manama for its “relentless repression” of anti-regime protesters, blaming Bahraini security forces for their repeated use of “excessive force to quash anti-government protests.”

On February 14, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also called on the Bahraini regime to respect its “international human rights obligations” in dealing with peaceful protests in the country.
