An Israeli military contractor involved in installing espionage systems along the apartheid wall in the occupied West Bank has been picked by the United States to erect similar systems along its Mexico border.

Elbit Systems announced that the US Department of Homeland Security Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had awarded its subsidiary a $145-million contract to deploy border surveillance technology in its southern state of Arizona, al-Akhbar reported Wednesday, citing Israeli and Western media sources.

According to the report, the one-year contract may expand to a broader one-billion-dollar deal if the US Congress passes strict immigration legislation.

The Israeli company is set to erect watch towers along the US-Mexico border with sensors for spotting, tracking, and classifying data, along with command and control centers, the report adds.

Meanwhile, a US government contractor justified the choice of the Israeli firm for the border project, citing its “advanced” experience in maintaining separation barriers.

Elbit Systems is one of the primary military suppliers of Israeli forces. Its Hermes 450 attack drone has been used extensively in the Israeli-besieged Gaza Strip, as well as in Lebanon during the 2006 war.

The company is also responsible for surveillance technology along the apartheid wall erected by the Israeli regime within the West Bank.

The 440-kilometer long barrier is widely considered illegal under international law.

Elbit, meanwhile, has been targeted by the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement for “directly” contributing to violations of international humanitarian law.

The Stop the Wall campaign has described Elbit as a “symbol” that “thrives on and fuels war, repression and control in Palestine and around the globe.”
