Syria’s Signature to Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Treaty into Effect Next Month

halqThe Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi stressed that his country’s signature on the “Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Treaty does not prevent it from benefiting from other capabilities that harm the enemy and create a strategic balance with it.”

In an interview with al-Ahed news, al-Halqi revealed that the Syrian signature to the treaty will come into effect from the 14th of next month.
“Syria will abide with what has been agreed upon recently,” he added.

As for the other Syrian strategic weapons, al-Halqi stated: “If you have a strategic weapon that can’t be used to create a balance of terror with the enemy [i.e. the chemical weapons] and you have other strategic equipment and weapons that benefit you more than this weapon, why should you keep it if you can avoid a military strike that might destroy much of the country’s economic and service infrastructure and lead to the loss of many civilian lives ?!”

“Syria has a lot of possibilities that form an alternative to this weapon and are able to hurt the enemy,” the Syrian top official added.
He further noted to the possibility of achieving a strategic balance with the enemy by owning sophisticated air defense and ground missile systems.”

“The Syrian Army continues to perform its national duties and fight against terrorism parallel to the preparations of Geneva 2 talks to launch a comprehensive political process,” al-Halqi mentioned.
Moreover, he said: “The recent Russian proposal regarding Syria’s chemical weapons protected Syria from a definite military strike , intended to destroy the economic and service infrastructure added to what remained from vital Syrian installations.”

Al-Halqi asserted that “he who reviews the bank of targets that the US threatened to hit finds many strategic targets. By destroying these targets, they sought to turn Syria into a failing and divided state.”
