Obama not helping poor, analyst says

The US administration’s main concern is the interests of the cartels that have put it into power not the problems of the poor people, an analyst says.

“Basically, the [US President Barack] Obama administration has cared about taking care of Wall Street and the people who put him into office as opposed to the problems of poor people,” California State University professor Paul Sheldon Foote said in an exclusive interview with Press TV.

Foote also pointed out that Obama has done nothing to help on savings and people are making near-zero interest on their savings.

The US academic warned of mounting inequality and a widening gap between the poor and the rich, noting that the US is becoming a country with a very small number of rich people and a large number of poor people.

The economic pressure and unemployment are getting so high that American people, even in rural areas, cannot form families and that has led to many cultural problems such as single-parent families, he said.

“On the other hand, investment in agriculture is getting worse and the cost of outputs is going up. It is harder for the farmers to make a living so the rural areas have a bleak future for the poor people,” Foote concluded.

The latest figures released by the US Census Bureau show that poverty is on the rise in rural areas across the country.

The statistics show that over 15 percent of rural Americans are living in poverty. The rate is higher than in urban and exurban counties.

The estimates also show that the national poverty rate was over 14 percent in 2009 — the highest since 1994. The number for 2009 is also the highest in over 50 years for which poverty estimates are available.
