Family of Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief killed in ‘israeli’ air raid

The wife, son and daughter of Wael Dahdouh, Al Jazeera Arabic’s bureau head in Gaza, have been killed in an Israeli air raid.

Footage shown on Al Jazeera shows Dahdouh entering a hospital in Gaza to see his killed family members in the morgue.

Looking shocked, Dahdouh spoke to Al Jazeera: “What happened is clear, this is a series of targeted attacks on children, women and civilians. I was just reporting from Yarmouk about such an attack, and the Israeli raids have targeted many areas, including Nuseirat (where his family resided).

“We had our doubts that the Israeli occupation would not let these people go without punishing them. And sadly that is what happened. This is the ‘safe’ area that the occupation army spoke of,” he said.

“You wanted to be a journalist,” Dahdouh said while kneeling on the floor next to the dead body of his son.

“They take revenge on us with our children?” he said, referring to the Israeli army. “It’s okay. To God we belong and to him we return.”

He later said his tears were not out of “fear or cowardice” but rather of humanity.

“This is the occupation’s policy, and this is our destiny and our choice, and we will not deviate,” Dahdouh added.

Some members of Dahdouh’s family, including a toddler granddaughter, survived the attack on the house they were staying in at the Nuseirat refugee camp south of Wadi Gaza.

Details are still coming in, and operations are ongoing to rescue some people from the wreckage of the home.
