US police have found four bodies, including two young boys, in a home in Tulsa, Okla. in what they believe to be a murder-suicide.

The bodies were found on Wednesday and police said the four people died from gunshot wounds.

“It appears to be a murder/suicide sort of scene,” said Tulsa Police Department Captain Matt McCord.

“Based on the physical evidence inside the house,” an adult male fatally shot a woman and two boys, who are believed to be below 10 years of age, before taking his own life, McCord explained.

Police found a handgun near the man’s body, McCord said, adding the bodies might have been in the house “as many as two days” knowing the time when the four were last seen as well as a preliminary examination of phone records.

“I’m shocked,” Vinicio Perez, a neighbor, told The Associated Press. “This place should be a place surrounded by security.”

Gun-related casualties have turned into a “major public health crisis” in the United States, according to a recent report by eight US medical associations.

The US averages 87 deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.

A non-profit website called Gun Violence Archive has recorded over 4,000 gun incidents in the country in 2015 (as of February 6). According to the website, 1,207 people lost their lives to gun violence during the first 36 days of this year.
