Pakistani inmate dies in hospital after attack in Indian jail

A Pakistani prisoner, who had been attacked by a fellow inmate at a jail in Indian-administered Kashmir, has died of his injuries, doctors say.
According to doctors, Sanaullah Ranjay died early on Thursday at a government hospital in the city of Chandigar due to “multiple organ failure.”
The 52-year-old inmate suffered injuries in the attack at Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu on May 3.
“He had multiple organ failure due to severe head injury. The team of doctors headed by Prof Y.K. Batra tried their best to revive him,” the hospital said in a statement.
Ranjay’s death comes a week after an Indian inmate held in Pakistan’s city of Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat prison, died of a brutal attack by inmates.
Following the Pakistani prisoner’s death, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said an inquiry would be launched into the attack on Ranjay.
“While the inquiry will fix responsibility for any dereliction of duty, the fact that this happening at all is a matter of great regret,” he wrote on Twitter.
However, Pakistan High Commission spokesman Manzoor Ali Memon described the incident as “an extra-judicial killing” of a Pakistani citizen.
He added that the government in New Delhi has been asked to immediately return the body of the dead inmate to Pakistan.
Meanwhile the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Islamabad has conveyed its concern to the Indian government and “demanded that an investigation into the incident be held and perpetrators of this heinous crime be brought to justice.”
“The prime minister of Pakistan has also called upon the government of India to ensure the safety and security of all Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails,” the ministry added.
Ranjay was in jail for the past 17 years on militancy-related charges.
