UK-organized UNSC meet on Syria held

UN Security Council members held ‘illegal’ informal discussions on Friday with the self-declared heads of Syrian opposition for the first time since the conflict erupted in the country in March 2011.

The closed-door meeting was organized by British ambassador Mark Lyall Grant at UN headquarters in New York in a desperate attempt by the UK government to compel the 15 council members to recognize the so-called opposition in Syria.
Syria’s ambassador to the UN, Bashar Jaafari, protested that the meeting was “illegal” as the government of president Bashar al-Assad is recognized by the UN and a majority of the international community’s members.
The so-called Syrian National Coalition or, the opposition, is comprised of various Western-backed minority groups who have teamed up with al-Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra Front and took arms against the popular government of President Bashar al-Assad.
The alliance aims to topple the government of President Assad through foreign-backed military force, something that the Syrian people vehemently oppose.
The more than two years insurgency has resulted in the death of tens of security forces and ordinary citizens who have fallen victims to terrorist-led attacks inside Syria.
