British police say they have arrested four people and searched properties across England in an investigation of suspected terrorist acts related to the insurgency in Syria.

According to Scotland Yard, two British men, aged 22 and 29 were arrested on suspicion of involvement in “the commission, preparation or instigation” of acts of terrorism as they arrived at the port of Dover from France.

The men, who are apparently of Pakistani origin, were arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 on Monday, September 16 and are currently in custody at a London police station.

Police also seized ammunition from the suspects.

“The searches are ongoing and we are unable to provide more details at this stage,” Scotland Yard said.

British police said investigations were being carried out at properties in east London and Lancashire. Two vehicles had also been searched.

A 27-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were also nabbed in Essex, east of London, as part of the same probe.

The British government has expressed concerns over Britons going to Syria to join the insurgency there.

Earlier last year, then-MI5 chief Jonathan Evans admitted that British “would-be jihadis” were known to be travelling and receiving training in the likes of Libya and Egypt.

Figures last year suggested more than 100 Britons had received training by terrorist groups in Somalia and Evans indicated there could be a steady stream of new recruits in the UK.
