The zionist regime has launched airstrikes on the southern part of the besieged Gaza Strip in the latest round of tit-for-tat violence in the occupied territories.

The latest Israeli airstrikes on Thursday hit the southern Gaza city of Rafah near the Egyptian border, injuring several Palestinians.

Earlier in the day, rockets fired from the Gaza Strip struck two southern Israeli towns of Ashkelon and Ashdod causing people to seek shelter.

Israeli sources said the anti-missile Iron Dome system failed to intercept at least eight Palestinian rockets.

The escalation began on March 11 when an Israeli airstrike killed three Palestinians in the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.

The deadly incident triggered a series of retaliatory attacks between the two sides.

The Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas has blamed Tel Aviv for the escalation of tensions in the region.

This is while Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has called for the full re-occupation of Gaza in the wake of the violence.

Gaza has been blockaded since June 2007, a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

The apartheid regime of Israel denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights, such as freedom of movement, jobs that pay proper wages, and adequate healthcare and education
