MPs to vote on Catalonia referendum

Spain’s parliament is to vote on whether to allow the autonomous community of Catalonia to hold a referendum on independence from Spain.
According to AP, Spanish lawmakers will vote on whether to allow Catalonia’s regional assembly to hold an independence referendum on Tuesday.
Analysts say the motion will be rejected by the lawmakers as it is fiercely opposed by the ruling Popular Party, which holds a majority in the parliament, as well as by the opposition Socialists.
Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria warned last week that if Catalonia quits Spain, it will no longer be a member of the European Union.
