Iranian, Qatari Diplomats, Military Officials Confer on Ties

Iranian and Qatari top diplomats and the two countries’ military officials held talks on expansion of bilateral relations and cooperation.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and his Qatari counterpart Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in a phone conversation on Wednesday discussed bilateral ties between the two countries, the latest regional developments, as well as issues related to the Vienna negotiations.

The two sides also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.

Meantime, Iranian and Qatari military delegations met in Doha on Tuesday to discuss border and coastal security issues.

The 16th meeting of the Coast Guard and Border Security Managers between Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Iran was held to review some of the issues related to the security of the two countries.

The Qatari delegation was headed by Director General of Qatari Coast and Border Security Brigadier General Nasser Jabr al-Nuaimi and the Iranian delegation was led by Commander of the Iranian Border Guards Brigadier General Ahmad Ali Goudarzi.

The periodic meeting was held in line with the agreement signed between the two countries on coordination on vessel security issues and other issues related to coastal and border security.

Iranian President Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi said in February that Tehran and Doha have decided to obviate the obstacles to the further broadening of their trade and economic relations, adding that Iran plans to open a trade office in Qatar soon.

President Rayeesi made the remarks upon arrival in Tehran after a visit to Qatar.

He said that during his trip, the issue of establishing a trade office in Qatar was raised, which should be done quickly.

Issues related to the removal of customs obstacles and issuance of business licenses were also brought up, Rayeesi said, adding that Iran’s Industry, Mine and Trade minister and Qatar’s Commerce and Industry minister were tasked with taking immediate steps to remove economic, trade, and investment barriers between the two countries.

“The trip was in line with [Tehran’s] neighborly diplomacy, with the two main goals of increasing mutual trust and cooperation with neighbors and [expanding] Iran’s share in the region’s economy and trade,” he said.
