Iran extends congratulations to its fraternal nation, Lebanon, on the successful election of the new president

The Iranian Embassy in Lebanon has extended its congratulations to the Arab nation on the election of Joseph Aoun as its new president. The embassy expressed a keen interest in enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation between Iran and Lebanon.

In a statement released on Thursday via its X account, the mission conveyed optimism that the election would enhance bilateral relations across a broad spectrum of areas between the two nations, which it described as “brotherly.”

A statement released in Arabic expressed congratulations to Lebanon on the election of General Joseph Aoun as the President of the Republic, highlighting the broad consensus surrounding this decision.

The announcement expressed hopes for the success of His Excellency’s mission, emphasizing a commitment to enhancing the relationship between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Lebanon. The statement highlighted aspirations for collaborative efforts across various sectors to advance mutual interests and contribute to regional stability and prosperity.

Earlier today, Lebanon’s parliament successfully elected Michel Aoun as president following two rounds of voting by the 128-member legislative body. This decision marks the end of a prolonged presidential vacuum, as the parliament had previously been unable to elect a leader on 12 occasions over the past two years.

In a significant electoral outcome, Aoun garnered a commanding 99 votes out of a possible 128 in Lebanon’s profoundly divided parliament. This result was achieved with backing from diverse political factions, notably including both Hezbollah lawmakers and their adversaries.

His election brought an end to a protracted leadership void, which had hindered crucial reforms and amplified anxieties about a potential wider collapse in the face of the country’s numerous crises.

Following his recent election, Aoun, who held the position of the 14th commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces since 2017, officially vacated his military post. He proceeded to enter parliament, where he took the oath of office, dressed in civilian clothing.

Aoun is tasked with supervising the enforcement of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, while also forming a new government to tackle the challenges of post-war reconstruction.

In a preliminary assessment released in November, the World Bank estimated the physical destruction and economic losses resulting from the conflict in Israel at $8.5 billion.
