US lawmakers criticized Trump, claiming he is “calling for ethnic cleansing,” and have condemned the military actions in Gaza

US President Donald Trump's unexpected proposal to assume "ownership" of Gaza following the resettlement of Palestinians has incited significant backlash, including from within Washington. U.S. lawmakers have strongly criticized the proposed plan, labeling it as "ethnic cleansing."

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, a Muslim member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has denounced former President Donald Trump’s recent statements, accusing him of “explicitly advocating for ethnic cleansing” in the embattled region.

In a social media post on platform X, Representative Rashida Tlaib addressed comments made by Trump earlier on Tuesday. During a joint press conference with the visiting Israeli Prime Minister, Trump declared intentions for the United States to “take over and own Gaza,” prompting widespread criticism.

Representative Rashida Tlaib accused the president of endorsing ethnic cleansing during a meeting with an individual she described as a genocidal war criminal.

She stated, “He shows no hesitation in halting federal funding for American workers, while financial support to the Israeli regime remains uninterrupted.”

Trump has proposed an initiative where the United States would assume control of the conflict-stricken Gaza Strip, with a focus on economic development following the relocation of Palestinian residents. Trump stated that this plan would serve as a source of pride for the entire West Asia region.

Earlier today, Trump made a surprising proposal, suggesting the permanent relocation of over two million Palestinians from Gaza to adjacent nations. He further characterized the besieged region as a “demolition site.” The announcement has generated widespread discourse and varied reactions across diplomatic channels.

He further asserted that Palestinians in Gaza would eagerly seek opportunities to relocate and reside outside their conflict-ridden region, if such options were available to them.

Democratic U.S. Senator Chris Murphy sharply criticized Trump’s comments on Gaza, characterizing them as “a bad joke” and emphasizing that the United States has no intention of taking control of the region.

Trump recently proposed the idea of resettling Palestinians, currently affected by the ongoing conflict, to nearby Arab nations such as Egypt and Jordan. This suggestion involves clearing the Palestinian territories and seeking support from neighboring countries to relocate those impacted by the hostilities.

Analysts suggest that proposals for the relocation of refugees could provide the Israeli government with justification to forcibly remove Palestinians from Gaza and subsequently resettle the area with Israeli settlers.

Over the course of more than 15 months of conflict between Israel and Palestine, reports indicate that over 61,000 individuals have lost their lives, with a significant number being women and children.

The population of Gaza, numbering approximately 2.3 million, has faced repeated displacement, leaving significant portions of the embattled region in a state of devastation.

On January 15, after not meeting its war objectives—such as the eradication of Hamas and the liberation of hostages—the Israeli government consented to a ceasefire agreement with the Palestinian movement Hamas.
