The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) nations were seeking for a flag-bearer to lead them in their struggle against the US hegemony and their selection of Iran as the new NAM president means that they have entrusted this power and responsibility to the Islamic Republic, Iranian First Vice-President Mohammad Reza Rahimi said.
Addressing a scientific festival here in Tehran on Monday, Rahimi pointed to the world nations’ anger at the US hegemonic policies, and stated, “All countries are tired of the US and its bullying and are seeking to find a role model for themselves.”
He pointed to the recent summit of the NAM in Tehran, and said, “These NAM members were seeking to find a flag-bearer in a bid to confront the expansionism of the US and its allies such as Britain and Canada.”
Referring to Iran’s role in the new world management after selection of Tehran as the new NAM president, and noted, “Both foes and friends acknowledge that the Islamic Republic of Iran is a truly non-aligned country which has now ascended to the presidency of the movement.”
A senior advisor of the Iranian Supreme Leader said that the US and Israel are seeking to undermine Iran’s leadership during its presidency over the Non-Aligned Movement after they failed to prevent the world leaders’ participation in the NAM summit in Tehran.
Given their failed efforts to sabotage the Tehran summit, “they now intend to trouble Iran’s management over the NAM,” Senior Advisor of the Iranian Supreme Leader for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati told FNA on Sunday.
“They will not succeed this time, either,” Velayati stated.
The 16th heads-of-state summit of the NAM officially wrapped up work in Tehran on Friday night.
NAM is an international organization of states considering themselves not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. NAM is the largest grouping of countries outside of the United Nations.
NAM member states represent nearly two-thirds of the United Nations’ members and comprise 55% of the world population, particularly countries considered to be developing or part of the Third World.
