African Americans starting an ‘intifada’ against police brutality: Analyst

African Americans are starting an “intifada” or an uprising against police brutality and unlawful murders by law enforcement agencies, a researcher and historian in Washington says.

“In the aftermath of the police execution of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, there is a national outrage and movement to fight against militaristic, fascistic policing, in particular by young African-Americans,” said Randy Short.

Brown, 18, was shot multiple times and killed Saturday by police in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, a predominantly African-American town. Since then, protests over the fatal shooting have been held in Ferguson every night.

One day after boiling tensions over the incident began to subside, emotions flared again on Friday as the police released evidence that the victim was a suspect in a convenience store robbery.

“People are really, really fed up and this is not going to go away, it’s likely to get worse,” Dr. Short told Press TV in a phone interview on Saturday.

“This is an intifada,” Short stated, drawing comparison with Palestinian intifadas, or uprisings, against Israeli occupation and oppression. “I believe our people are waking up and our momentum cannot be stopped.”

Brown’s death harkens back to the racially-charged case of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who went out one night in Sanford, Florida in 2012 to buy candy and was shot to death by a white neighborhood watch volunteer. His shooter was later acquitted of murder charges.

Nearly half of Americans do not trust that justice will be served after police officers kill civilians, according to a new Huffington Post and YouGov poll, conducted days after Brown’s death.
