Ahmadinejad Urges Restructuring of UN

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad underlined the weak structure of the UN, and said Tehran is ready to help revise the structure of the world body, reiterating that “discrimination is not acceptable in any form”.

Addressing the 67th UN General Assembly meeting in New York on Wednesday, the Iranian President said, “Discrimination is not acceptable in any form and Iran is ready to help correct the structure of the United Nations.”

To start his UN General Assembly address, Ahmadinejad stated that everyone is gathered in the UN for peace “for the entire human community and our nations”.

“I represent a great and proud nation,” he said, adding that his “noble” nation has a global vision and welcomes any vision that provides peace, stability, and tranquility.

Ahmadinejad said he spoke in the past seven years on the problems of the world and today “wants to discuss the issues from a different perspective”.

Ahmadinejad said much of history is filled with unmarked failures.

Ahmadinejad said an independent team should have conducted investigations and trial with regard to the events caused by terrorism such as the Sept. 11 attacks and the handling of Osama bin Laden’s death.

He said Zionist-ruled media need to reveal the “reality” of what’s going on in the world.

Ahmadinejad said he believes the Security Council (SC) is controlled by a handful of governments, and underlined that mankind will be better if these countries didn’t handle such power.

Discussing the world economy, he said consumerism only favors a number of countries and capitalism runs a “vicious circle”.

Ahmadinejad said that “arms race and intimidation by nuclear weapons and weapons of mass-‘destruction by the hegemonic powers have become prevalent,” and that “continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation is a clear example of this bitter reality.”

“Hegemonic powers” have utilized and “threatened” other countries with nuclear power.

“No one feels secure or safe,” said Ahmadinejad, even if governments have stockpiles of such weapons.

Ahmadinejad called for a new world order based on “cooperation and harmony”.

He said the current international order is “depressive”. “I do not believe the Muslims, Christians, Jews…..are hostile to each other.”

“The current world order has certain characteristics” that include “unfounded in materialism,” “shaped according to selfishness,” “believes in classification of human beings,” “aims to monopolize,” and are based on domination.”

Ahmadinejad said the way to get out of the current situation is a “new order” which is much needed by the world.

He said the new order should have peace for all walks of life, rulers must love people, adjust order where everybody is equal before love, and no double standard.

“Is it possible to have such an order?” questioned Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad listed various ways which the new order can happen if all countries collaborated. “It is important, that the United Nations belongs to all nations,” and that the “monopoly” in the UN is “unacceptable.”

Ahmadinejad said that capitalism is currently in a “quagmire” and in a “deadlock.”

He invited all in the world to play a role in the decision-making process in the world.

He said the UN is suffering deficiency and needs restructuring.

Ahmadinejad said God will provide peace, security, and justice to all. He noted the arrival of Imam Mahdi (AS) – the 12th of Shiite Islam – will help bring a new life to the world.

“He will bless humanity with a spring.”

“Long live this spring.”

Ahmadinejad speech ended at 11:40 a.m., and noticeably absent compared to previous speeches is heavy mention of the role of Israel in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict in the region and Northern Africa.

The 67th session of the General Assembly features over 120 world leaders discussing matters occurring in and around their countries, and Ahmadinejad did so for the last time today as Iran’s President and chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
